On The Wine List

On The Wine List

By Emily on News

This autumn we’ve updated our wine list, to reflect the change in season. We’ve introduced some great value wines from South Africa, Chile, and Italy.

Our new Stonedale Shiraz is a little spicier than its predecessor and is ideal for the bigger flavored dishes on this seasons menu.

The Ca’Luca Merlot offers an alternative to our really popular Boatmans Drift. Soft and round, with a good finish according to Nick our wine expert!

The Chilean Chardonnay is rich, and quite a classic flavor. Fruity tones knock back the richness of the Chardonnay grape.

All new wines are great value at under £20 a bottle and if you show your Carlton Club card delivers exceptional value. So what are you waiting for? Come and sample some delicious wine this autumn!

Why not become a member of The Carlton Club to hear about all of our latest offers? Carlton Club members also get 20% off food and drink so don’t miss out! Find out how to join here. Please note: The Carlton Club discount doe not apply to this deal.

Top 5 dog walks in Ilfracombe

Top 5 dog walks in Ilfracombe

By Eliot Wren on Local Area

Morte Point, Mortehoe Village

Enjoy a challenging walk through a rare spot of coastal heathland which provides the wonderful backdrop for a wealth of wild flowers and wildlife.  You might even be lucky enough to spot some of our infamous sealife including dolphins and seals.

This wonderful dog walk will take you out into the fresh country air and really give you an opportunity to get the blood pumping with steep ascents, steps and descents to challenge you along the way.  Adventurers will be rewarded with the discovery of some hidden beaches along the way and for those who enjoy a bit of history, discover why Morte Point has been responsible for many a shipwreck throughout the centuries.

Saunton Sands

A short drive or long walk along the South West Coast Path and you arrive at stunning Saunton Sands.  This particular beach is a favourite for dog walks as it welcomes dogs year round.

Saunton Sands employs easy to follow zoning sections where just the car park and first 5 minutes of your stroll requires that your dog is kept on the lead.  From here you have the next 3.5 miles of golden sands to explore and enjoy with your four legged friend.

Hillsborough Nature Reserve

Known to the locals as ‘the sleeping elephant’, Hillsborough Nature Reserve offers a short but testing walk for you and your dog.  This dog walk takes you past beaches which are also dog friendly so offers plenty of opportunity for a run and a dip in the sea for both of you – especially welcome during those warm summer months!

The views provided by this dog walk are glorious – a bird’s eye view of Ilfracombe, out to Lundy Island and even as far as the South Wales coast.  There is so much for nature lovers to enjoy along the way too with an array of wildlife and their habitats to be seen.

Baggy Point

As well as providing a dog friendly route, Baggy Point is also an easy access route which is especially important in opening up our beautiful countryside walks to as many people as possible.  Considered an easy route, Baggy Point lends itself to those pups who cannot manage a challenging route but still enjoy the great outdoors.  It is also considered equally good for young children.

Baggy Point might be a shorter, easier dog walk than others on our list, but nonetheless it delivers in breathtaking sights.  The views along the way extend along the coast and out to sea and you can also enjoy sightings of our diverse wildlife and sealife – there’s plenty to keep everyone captivated along the way.

The South West Coast Path

The Carlton Hotel is delightfully situated in Ilfracombe town centre where you can begin dog walks in any direction to end up on the beautiful South West Coast Path.  Here we have miles and miles of stunning countryside and coastal walks to explore and discover your very own favourite spot.

Whilst we have only covered our top 5 dog walks in this blog, there are of course so many dog walks here to enjoy and far too many to list .  The South West Coast Path website is an excellent place to begin to plan your local dog walks when you visit us here in Ilfracombe.

The Carlton Hotel is a dog friendly hotel which welcomes well behaved humans and their four legged friends.  Our aim is to make your break as pleasurable for your dog as it is for you.  Inform us when you book and we will endevour to ensure all your needs are met, including bowls and dog beds in your room.

We look forward to welcoming you and your dog to The Carlton Hotel.

North Devon, a Paradise for Surfers

By Eliot Wren on Local Area

Discover North Devon, a Surfers Paradise, and retreat to The Carlton for stylish comfort

Perhaps one of Ilfracombe’s most prized features is our location.  A coastal town situated in North Devon, we are nestled on the Atlantic Coast.  Surfers come to North Devon to get away from city life and experience some of the best surf to be found anywhere in the UK. A stay in Ilfracombe allows you to avoid the hubbub of larger, more well known towns, along the same coastline but with the same buzz!

Bring your own board, rent everything you need or even learn to surf at many nearby beaches.  With an array of stunning locations to surf, you could easily visit a different beach every day of your trip and take home memories that will last a lifetime.

These are our top 3 surf spots near Ilfracombe:

Woolacombe

Just along the coast from Ilfracombe sits stunning Woolacombe beach.  The beach goes on as far as the eye can see, beautiful golden sands stretch on and on.  And the waves?  Well there is a reason Woolacombe is dubbed a ‘surf town’!

Make this your first surf spot when you visit us and you might not want to even try another beach!

Putsborough

Putsborough beach, or simply ‘Putts’ as the locals call it, is possibly one of the most hidden of our amazing beaches here in North Devon.  We’ve yet to find anyone disappointed with this beach.  Surfers and body-boarders alike enjoy the rolling waves year round for good reason!

It’s worth going a little out of the way to discover – you’ll be glad you did!

Croyde

Croyde is one of those places for which words can’t really describe how beautiful it really is.  Largely unspoilt, there are some local facilities but here you really feel like you could be lost anywhere in the world – and with waves and a beach like this, you wouldn’t even be bothered if you were!

At less than 20 minutes away from Ilfracombe it really is a beach worth visiting if surfing is your passion.  Come and discover why surfers flock to this gorgeous spot.

Surf and Stay

If you enjoy a more luxurious getaway than the usual surf break can offer, a stay at The Carlton Hotel provides just that.  Fine food in our brasserie, wind down in our lounge and enjoy a comfortable night sleep in our newly refurbished, stylish rooms.

After a day hitting the surf, isn’t it nice to know that you can simply come back to The Carlton Hotel where you can relax in comfort?

Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club Start Championships With a Bang!

Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club Start Championships With a Bang!

By Eliot Wren on Local Area

THE 2017 PILOT GIG WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTED OFF WITH A BANG FOR ILFRACOMBE PILOT GIG CLUB.

Two of its members, Jeremy Webb and Rhys Deane, rowed to the Isles of Scilly.  This was as part of their preparation to row around the UK as part of Island Voyagers.  Rowing out of Penzance on Thursday, they made landfall on St Marys after an 18-hour battle against changing winds and strong tides.

Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club Achieve Impressive First Day Results

Racing began in earnest on Friday evening with the Supervets and Veterans races.  The Women’s Supervets race started proceedings and Ilfracombe had a strong showing, placing 21st.  The calm sea conditions favoured the Ilfracombe Women’s Veterans crew, storming to a strong 14th place in the following race.

Next was the turn of the Men’s Crews who had a very similar showing.  The Men’s Supervets coming in 25th while the Veterans held off a strong Dutch boat to come in 15th.

The Weekend Challenge…

The calm conditions of Friday evaporated for the weekend as strong winds blew in a challenging swell.  The women’s A crew pushed through the chop well with consistently strong races.  They consolidated their position in group C and finished the weekend in 27th place.

The B crew had a great weekend of rowing.  With a mix of fresh rowers and more experienced hands, they rounded out the top 100 in 99th place.  Several of the women aided international relations and competed with an American crew, helping them finish the competition in 128th place.

The men’s weekend was hard fought.  Both the A and the B crews started the weekend in a slow berth against strong winds and tides.   The B crew finished the first race in 108th place.  With a colossal effort they jumped 28 places over the weekend.  This achievement was more than any other crew and they finish 80th overall.   Plaudits must be given to Tom Jeffery, one of Ilfracombe’s junior rowers, who has now made the step up to the men’s crews.  Tom kept his head and held the crew together well in difficult conditions.

The A crew fared better in the first race, pushing hard to make it to 39th place.  Over the next 2 races they fought their way into group C, narrowly missing out on moving into group B.

The final race was a scrap between Ilfracombe A and neighbouring Torridge A fighting for the lead of group C.  The crews were neck and neck for much of the race.  Rough swells kicked up the wind and Ilfracombe come out on top to win the group.  They finished a rather impressive 25th in the world!

Walking in North Devon? Stay at The Carlton

By Eliot Wren on Local Area

Walking breaks in North Devon

Rambling, walking or simply strolling, from Ilfracombe lets you explore the dramatic North Devon coast and in land trails at your leisure.

With a great choice of coastal, inland and combinations of walks to be enjoyed, you get to take in the very best of the area and it’s magnificent views. And, when you base yourself at the Carlton, you are at the centre of a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and within a unique UNESCO biosphere.

The amazing South West Coast path can be joined from the rear of the hotel. The Tarka trail, much of it over redundant railway alignment, naturally offers a less rigorous walk, but with the opportunity to see hidden views.

At the Carlton we regularly host individual and groups of ramblers. Our experience at looking after you before and after an arduous walk will be rewarding.

Read our Handy Guide to Walking in North Devon

We can fully cater for your day with a great range of meal options including Continental and Full English breakfast choices, picnic lunches and mouth-watering three-course diners. We can even arrange a rendezvous, where we deliver to you a hot soup and lunch – very popular during the colder months.

When you return to the hotel why not relax in our library with a hot chocolate, latte, freshly brewed tea and afternoon cake? Of course our well-stocked bar and wine list can meet your other refreshment needs.

Our drying room can dry any outer clothing if unusually the Devon weather isn’t so kind.
