Garden heaven
One thing we do really well in Devon is gardens – they say it’s due to our warm climate and very varied landscape. We have a host of lovely gardens to visit in North Devon, some public, some private – but all very different.
This is one of only six Royal Horticultural Society gardens in the country, so be prepared to be wowed. It’s huge, and easily provides a day’s entertainment. There’s rose gardens, cottage gardens, veg gardens, steam and bog gardens, meadows, orchards, woodlands and a beautiful lake. There’s also a great café, shop and plant sales area and lots to do for children.
Very well known locally, this large garden was created by a local doctor many years ago and has always been open to the public. It’s got the lot – lakes, streams, unusual plants, wildlife and makes for a super afternoon out.
If you’re in Lee Bay you will come across The Gate House garden which follows the stream through the valley. It’s full of hidden corners and unusual plant treasures and is a secret paradise.
Docton Mill and Clovelly Court
If you head down the coast a little you’ll find Clovelly, a much photographed village itself, but a little secret is the Clovelly Court Garden which you’ll find near the church just before the main Clovelly car park. This is a beautiful walled garden, and you can walk across past the house to see fabulous sea views and walk through a like tree avenue. Just a bit further along there’s Docton Mill, a hidden gem in a wooded valley centred around an old mill. It’s magical!
It’s worth checking the National Open Garden Scheme where people open their gardens for charity. We have several near us including Linden Rise over in Combe Martin which is open on July 15 and several in Brendon which are open on 4&5 August. This are all great gardens and ones you wouldn’t normally get to see.
