The Carlton Hotel, Ilfracombe is the ideal base if you are considering a few days away combined with your passion for art.
We welcome individuals, groups, friends, clubs, and societies. Options include courses at the hotel or at nearby studios. We work with the local artists to ensure that you can really take advantage of the areas’ talent – both the practitioner and the environment.
The town is home to multiple galleries and of course Hirst’s magnificent Verity statue. Twice a year many artists participate in exhibition weekends including Art Trail and Art Trek.
From time to time we offer inclusive weekends which include tutored sessions. Our next event is featured here.
During the Art Trail weekend, usually in early May, the beautiful town of Ilfracombe offers visitors a warm welcome to an informal open house art event. Artists and crafts people open their homes, studios, and galleries for you to view and purchase a varied collection of arts and crafts.
You’ll have the opportunity to also take part in free workshops, visit open gardens and listen to live music.
And at The Carlton we host local artists work for the weekend.
Whilst later in the summer, during the Art Trek Open Studios visitors can participate in an event that has just celebrated its 15th year. Growing from a small trail of just eleven artists at the beginning, into a large annual event which can have up to 100 artists and makers taking part.
Each year new artists and makers join Art Trek along with some of our regular and more established artists – we like to encourage younger artists, perhaps just starting out in their careers, alongside artists such as Sandy Brown who have had long and successful careers in the UK and worldwide. Creating this mix stimulates a freshness and depth to the event, challenging the newer emerging artists to what can be achieved.
The Art Trek network across North Devon gives an opportunity to the artists, many working in rurally isolated places, to raise their profile and showcase their work directly to the public. For visitors it affords a rare opportunity to meet these artists and makers in a relaxed atmosphere, chat about their work processes, see demonstrations, join in special workshops and events but also giving the potential to buy or commission unique, hand-created artworks from those taking part.
