Welcome to The Carlton Hotel

The independently owned and operated Carlton Hotel is the ideal place to stay in Ilfracombe, North Devon.

The hotel is located on the level and positioned close to Ilfracombe’s many attractions and activities. It’s easy to walk to the towns seafront, harbour or high street from The Carlton. For real convenience we are right next door to the Tunnels Beaches. The Carlton is a great base for exploring North Devon. Our generous on site car parking is available to all guests free of charge. Stay with us and within a short time you can be on the award winning Atlantic beaches, enjoying the surf, kite flying or simply swimming. Exmoor is a short drive or cycle ride with its vast skies and impressive natural beauty. Closer to home other leisure pursuits are right on the doorstep. Shooting, golfing, cycling, walking and scuba diving can all be organised on your behalf by our team.

Introduction

Built in the Victorian period, and due to it’s heritage and age, the building has been adapted from its original 19th century layout over the years!

 

 

Before the hotel was called the Carlton it was known as the St Petroc Boarding Establishment. St Petroc being a well known saint born over the channel in Wales, the son of a king, He is better known for giving his name to Padstow in Cornwall, but spent much time in Devon especially along the coastal routes.

Pre-Arrival

At the point of booking please tell us about your special requirements. This would include, for example, the need for a room close to a lift, a walk in shower or special dietary requirements. If you contact us by phone then we can offer immediate advice. If you book on line or via a third party please indicate your needs at the point of booking.

Our aim is to cater for the needs of all visitors to our hotel. If you have any specific questions please feel free to phone, email or fax us and we will endeavour to help.

Arrival & Parking

Should you need to park close to the entrance, please ensure that the Reception is informed as soon as possible, and at least 24 hours beforehand. There are no specific reserved parking spots but we will endeavour to ensure that a parking spot is available, but unfortunately this cannot be guaranteed.

The hotel car park is directly in front of the building and guests may park at their risk, free of charge, on a first come basis. Once full, there is free on street parking or a pay and display car park nearby.

Check in time is normally between 15:00 and 22:00. If you require a different check in time, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements.

Reception

There are five steps up to the hotel main entrance but we can provide a portable ramp on request.
Flooring is all carpeted.

The reception area is on one level with level access to the lift.

Public Areas – General

We have a lift which accesses all floors. Lift buttons include details in Braille. The lift contains an internal safety beam that restricts the entrance width to 73.5cm wide.

There is an emergency button in the lift to alert Reception Staff.

The corridors are carpeted and well lit.

The restaurant, lounge and bar are on the ground floor. All public areas are carpeted.

Public Areas – WC

There is a public disabled, female and male toilet available on the ground floor.

Restaurant

Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are served in the dining area on the ground floor.

Furniture is flexible and can be moved on request. Tables generally are square and have under space of 64cm high by 70 cm wide. Wider tables are available if required. We have a mixture of chairs with arms and without.

Menus can be provided in large print by request.

The Restaurant is well lit.

There is background music in the restaurant.

Breakfast is a buffet style service, waiter service is also available and at all other meal times.

With prior notice we can cater for special diets

Bar & Lounges

Movable seating throughout. There are chairs with or without arms
There is direct access to the car park with five steps. A portable ramp is available on request.
There is background music in the lounge and bar.

Laundry

Guest laundry is available on request.

Wet outer clothes and boots can be hang dried in our large drying room.

Leisure Facilities

The hotel has a gym with four cardio equipment, bench and free weights, plus stretching mats.

Tennis is available in Bicclescombe Park.
And a short drive from the hotel you can play golf, clay pigeon shooting. Swimming (indoor and seaside), surfing, water sports, cycling, walking are readily accessible close with the nearby area.

Outdoor Facilities

There is a small seating area to the front of the hotel but located a short walk away is a park with its Victorian Band Stand

Conference & Entertainment

Within the lower ground floor area is a large multi purpose event space for dining, meetings, seminars and conferences. Seating is movable.

On the ground floor, the dance floor measures 8 metres long by 4.8m at its shortest width and 6m at the longest width.

Bedrooms

40 bedrooms on the upper floors.
5 bedrooms on the ground floor which are accessible by going down 5 steps from the reception area.
Corridor widths of 112cm and door width of 67cm,77cm or 87cm.
All rooms are en-suite and either have a bath or shower or bath with shower over in them.
We do not have any adapted bathrooms or grab rails in all rooms.
Locks are standard key operated and not key cards.
Flooring is fixed and slip resistant in bedrooms and bathrooms.
Rooms have televisions, operated by remote control and also have teletext facility.
Bedside lamps provided.
No handrails in corridors leading to bedrooms.
Departure time is 11:00am if you require assistance with luggage call reception

Additional Information

The Carlton Hotel is a no smoking property.

In the event of the need to evacuate the hotel, the bells will ring continuously. If you require assistance for evacuating please notify us on arrival. There is also a red door sign that should be hung outside your room overnight to ensure that assistance is best directed in the event of an evacuation.

Dogs are welcome, with a small charge made per night – with the exception of assistance dogs which stay free of charge.

The hotel is staffed 24 hours per day.

Trains: Barnstaple Station is 12 miles away for local services to Exeter. Tiverton Parkway (1 hour drive) is suited for intercity services to London and cross country.

Airports: Exeter International is the closest (56 Miles) and Bristol is 2 hours away and has more flghts.

Coaches: National Express Coaches depart twice daily, close to the hotel.

Buses: A frequent service connects Barnstaple, Bideford, Woolacombe and Combe Martin with Ilfracombe.
