Fresh year and fresh starts
We all think of January as a time for fresh starts, and it couldn’t be more true at The Carlton this month.
There were cheers all round when the scaffolding, which had been wrapping the hotel in the run up to Christmas, came down to reveal a new roof – not to mention a fresh coat of paint – in our favourite colour blue!
We love this old building and spent many a long hour when we first moved in, discovering her rich past, right back to pre-hotel days when she was two villas (if you look closely you can still see the ‘split’ in the corridors where the two houses met!). But we always knew that The Carlton’s roof needed restoring, so we took the decision to do the work this winter. It also meant that we could replace all the upper windows (double glazing will ensure you all get a great night’s sleep) and then there were those extra essentials, like netting to keep the seagulls off and, inside the loft space, housing for the new lift and chimney flues for the new boilers.
So, the work is done, and we’re thrilled with how she looks. We can’t thank our local builder Matt Rogers and his team enough for getting us through this major bit of work.
It’s not just the hotel which is feeling revived for the New Year….
About a year ago we launched a scheme where we offered free fitness sessions each week for members of staff. It coincided with some ‘Healthy Ilfracombe’ work the council was doing, promoting fitness around the town.
A personal trainer comes in, and does either group work or one to one sessions. Around six staff members take part and over the months it’s been a highlight of our week. There have been a few laughs, naturally, but it’s also genuinely been a great help. Hospitality can be a physically strenuous profession, the housekeepers in particular have a lot of moving and lifting to do, so to have advice and routines tailored to our needs is a bonus – and hopefully keeps us all fit and healthy! We even ran a little competition for ‘best improver’ which was won by head housekeeper Claire – a well deserved spa break was the prize.
Relax and rejuvenate
Inspired by our own healthy start to 2018, we’re offering a special Wellbeing Break. We have lighter menu choices and a selection of activities to choose from as well as use of our gym, and it’s just £50 per person per night throughout January and February. Interested? Find out more.
